At the Hillsborough County Public Defender’s Office, our commitment to advocating for our clients goes beyond the courtroom. Recently, our attorneys and support staff participated in a Re-Entry Simulator hosted by the Florida Department of Corrections (FDC). This immersive experience was used as a tool, to help our team understand the challenges our clients face after re-entering society after incarceration.

“It gave me a greater sense of empathy for my clients…”

Emmanuel, Assistant Public Defender

The Re-Entry Simulator Experience

This powerful experience places participants in the shoes of individuals re-entering society. The simulations involves various scenarios and tasks that mimic real-life challenges faced by those on probation. From securing employment and housing to meeting probation requirements and accessing necessary services, participants can relate to the hurdles and frustrations that many of our clients encounter daily. This simulator presented a glimpse of what can be considered a complex and often overwhelming process.

Beyond Legal Representation

This firsthand experience highlighted the importance of empathy as a Public Defender – enhancing our ability to connect with and support our clients. It is not enough to provide legal representation but also to advocate for policies and programs that promote successful re-entry and reduce recidivism. Our participation in the simulator has strengthened our advocacy for our clients and positive changes within the criminal justice system.
